Transitioning your cat to a grain free can or a raw food diet can have its challenges. Cats imprint textures on their tongues from the time they are young, so sometimes it is not the food they don’t like, but it is a different texture, so they don’t get it. Kidney failure is the leading cause of death in domesticated cats. Feeding your cat dry food dehydrates them and causes them to drink more water than what their plumbing system was geared for. So it essentially wears out. Feeding your cat a more “species appropriate” diet is essential for good health and long life.
Your cat is an obligate carnivore, which means that 95% of what they eat should be meat. If your cat is currently on dry food, try adding some high quality, grain free can food such as Wellness, Wuerva or several other brands to the dry food. Start small and take a few weeks to do the transition process. If they do not like your new formula try “baiting”, which means we are now going to outfox one of the smartest creatures on earth. Sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on top of the new mixture, or a few drops of tuna water to entice them. Gradually increase the wet food and decrease the dry until you are 100% on wet food. A 10# cat should eat about 3-4 ounces twice a day. Despite what your cat tells you, they do not need little crunchies to graze on all day. We have a transition handout in the salon to help you.
