Cats Need Their Space

Home » Cat Behavior » Cats Need Their Space

All cats have territories, which they defend and depend on for food, safety, and other resources. Cats establish their territories by scent marking and scratching. Hormones are released through the cheek pouches as well as the pads of the feet. So when your cat scratches, it is not to “sharpen their nails” as we have all heard, but to mark their territory. Understanding how a cat thinks and their genetic makeup aids in social behavior desired by cat owners.

When many cats share a household, conflict can arise, because instinctually they are bonded to their territory. Then we have a new cat in and it is invading their space. It is only natural instinct to want to protect their territory. It is the foundation of survival. Even though cats have now been domesticated for many years, these strong instincts still exist.

When introducing a new cat, restrict their roaming space, allowing the current cat to have run of the house without being threatened. Gradually introduce the new cat. Provide seperate litter boxes, food and water. There are also Flower Essences we sell called New Home Group Living, which helps cats co-habitate in the same space. This can be added to their water, or put directly on their body.

There are some cats who would like to be the only cat on the face of the earth. Build an outdoor enclosure to give more space to these self-absorbed creatures. If you have any questions please email Adrienne for further tips on this issue at the salon.

I wanted to thank you for making our Nora look and feel so good. As I am typing this she is sitting on a shelf she hasn't been able to jump to in a long time. She is grooming herself again and getting around so much better. Thanks again, Anna Drake
